Hurricane Helene Brings Devastation to Appalachian Region

September 28, 2024

Hurricane Helene left millions without power and brought devastation to the Appalachian Region. High winds soared through the region, toppling trees onto power-lines. However, rainfall from Helene caused complete destruction throughout the area, with high water levels toppling dams and overflowing rivers and creeks, causing mass flooding. Ballad Health's Unicoi County Hospital in Erwin, TN, was entirely overtaken by flood waters, leaving caregivers and patients stranded on the roof until being evacuated by helicopters. 1-26 in the same area as the Unicoi County Hospital is now closed after a bridge collapsed due to extreme flooding.

NCDOT reports that you should also consider all of Western North Carolina closed, as more than 400 roads are closed throughout the area. A mudslide has washed the eastbound side of I-40 into the Pigeon River, leaving the two major roadways (I-26 and I-40) from Tennessee to Asheville), Closed.

It is unknown how long it will take to fully restore power, replace bridges, and fix the infrastructure damage caused by Helene. Helene devastated many towns throughout the Appalachian Region. We at Appalachian Roots call Northeast Tennessee, Western North Carolina, and Southwest Virginia home. We are nestled in the middle of this region and wanted to share photos of a tiny portion of the damage caused.

As we begin the long recovery process, it is essential to recognize the resilience and strength of the Appalachian people. The devastation left by Helene is immense, but so is the spirit of the communities that are impacted. From volunteers offering aid to neighbors lending a helping hand, the rebuilding process is already underway. Our hearts are with everyone affected.
