At an elevation of 3,400 feet, Wiseman's View is one of the grandest views in North Carolina. This amazing overlook peers over the Linville Gorge and is often referred to as the Grand Canyon of Eastern America as it is the deepest gorge on the eastern coast. The Linville Gorge Wilderness is part of the Pisgah National Forest near the Linville Falls Community, roughly 60 miles from Asheville, NC. Wiseman's View features two viewing decks, one facing Hawkbill Mountain, and Table Rock Mountain. We highly recommend this option if you want to take in a sunrise. The other viewing deck faces down the Linville Gorge.
Getting to Wiseman's View can be challenging as GPS devices typically do not work well; we had issues with Google Maps. The best way to reach the parking area is from the Linville Falls area using US Highway 221 or the Blue Ridge Parkway, roughly a mile away. Old North Carolina 105 is the road leading you to the parking area; it is unpaved and very bumpy in places; we highly recommend using an appropriate 4x4 vehicle.
From the parking area, it is just a short, easy, .25-mile walk to the viewing area, which is handicap accessible. The two viewing decks above are not, as stone steps lead down to them. We recommend visiting during the summer and Autumn months to take in the full beauty of the area. Wiseman's View also makes for a great place to picnic.
If you are looking for places to stay or eat nearby, Linville Falls Lodge and & Cottages are available, and Louises's Rock House is within the Linville Falls Community. There is also the Linville Falls General Store if you want a quick snack or supplies.
Wiseman's View is one of our favorite spots in North Carolina, and once you visit, you'll see why. It's likely to become one of yours, too, as the Appalachian Mountains reveal their beauty in all its grandeur here.
